The IDM German Superbike Championship

Jed Metcher Round 8 Final Report   Date: Wednesday 06 November, 2013
The IDM German superbike championship concluded at the Lausitz Eurospeedway the same place it kicked off in April. The weather for this round was expected to be poor and it delivered exactly that, cold, wet and windy.

Surprisingly enough the team and I were more than happy to take on these conditions as we were still a step behind the rest of the field in the previous round. Friday morning’s track temperature was very low and abandoned by many riders including myself. During the day we improved the bike in the wet conditions and by the final session of the day we were comfortably placed in third position.

Qualifying on Saturday showed similar weather for the first session. I was able to place 4th and be the second fastest rider on Pirelli. Nearing the second session we realised that it was possible that the track may dry during the session. I was able to lead for 90% of the 30 minute session. In the closing minutes I managed to improve my time however, some riders decided to change to intermediate tyres. When I saw that I dropped to 3rd position I came into the box to change tyres but ran out of time to post a faster lap. We dropped to 7th position to start the following day’s races.

The track was mostly dry for race one with some patches of dampness. I got off to a great start going from 7th to 4th in the opening corners. Unfortunately we had a problem with the bike overheating during the race and lost many spots, due to the power of the bike dropping during the race. I fought very hard to hold 5th position but could only manage 7th.

Race two saw the track completely dry for the first time during the weekend. I was able to repeat my opening lap form crossing the line for the first time in 4th. I was then able to close in on the leading trio during the next three laps only to be run very wide mid corner by Swiss rider Roman Stamm. This let the trailing pack catch up and then the battle began. I was fighting with 4 other riders for 3rd position. As my luck has been going this season, it just so happened that one German rider Jan Buhn’s steering damper broke in the third last corner causing him to slow down as I was speeding up. We slightly collided helping the rider behind to pass me which meant I was relegated to 7th position as I crossed the line.

Although our last round was very challenging we were actually able to move from 6th place in the championship to 4th which is the best result for Suzuki in German IDM Supersport since 2007. I left the track on Sunday after helping, having a drink and thanking the boys at Suzuki Mayer who worked incredibly hard for me all season. But my next days mission was to head to World Superbike Jerez, in an attempt to organise a contract for 2014 back in the world championship. I am still in contact with many teams, but without financial support it seems that it will be difficult to enter back into the world championship for next season. I have some opportunities on the table in some domestic championships and will keep everyone informed as they progress.

I would like to give special thanks to Anthony Carr who supported me on track this season on many occasions. Without his support 2013 would have been incredibly difficult.

Of course I would like to thank all my sponsors, family, friends and Suzuki Mayer for the 2013 Season.
